Wilhelm Wundt in Leipzig: A journey into the history of psychological research
Wilhelm Wundt, the ‚father‘ of experimental psychology, was appointed professor of physiology at Leipzig in 1875. In the same year, he established the first psychological laboratory in the world. This laboratory became a role model for each scientist who held a serious interest in psychology. Consequently, all subsequent psychological laboratories were closely modelled after the Wundt model.
The journey to Leipzig provides an opportunity to meet the beginnings of psychological research. The guided tour will present the remains of Wundt‘s life and work, and will also include a short tour through the center of Leipzig.
We can offer two possible arrangements:
Short tour: The short tour will focus on the Wundt room  at the University of Leipzig. It contains an interesting exhibit of personal effects, writings, and you will see some of the original laboratory equipment. Moreover, you will see
first editions of Wundt‘s work, such as the ‚Grundzüge der physiologischen Psychologie‘. The tour will be guided by an expert from the University of Leipzig and all comments will be in English (approx. 45 minutes).
Long tour: Following the visit to the Wundt room, you will be guided to the center of Leipzig - the hometown of Johann Sebastian Bach, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the City of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. The tour will lead you to the preserved old dwellings of Ernst Heinrich Weber, Gustav Thedor Fechner, and Wilhelm Wundt. It will also include a visit of the Fechner memorial and Wundt‘s gravestone at the Südfriedhof. Finally, you will see the so-called Wundt Eiche (Wundt oak) which marks a location in Clara-Zetkin-Park where Wundt regularly stopped to sit while on his daily walk (approx. 3h).

Both options include bus transport from Berlin to Leipzig, and return. More information (dates, fees) will be provided in the newsletters and on this webpage.
In case of interest, please let us know by email to niedegg@zedat.fu-berlin.de whether you would like to join the short or the long tour.
Reservation for these tours will be possible on-site at the booth of “Psychology in Berlin and Potsdam”.
