PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT

Largest world congress for psychology of all time in Berlin
ICP 2008 20. – 25.07.2008 at the ICC
Program now online

What was long apparent is now a certainty: The XXIX International Congress of Psychology 2008 (ICP 2008), taking place in Berlin from the 20. to 25. July, will be the largest world congress of psychology of all time. At the time of writing there have already been more than 7300 registrations.

The congress will cover a broad range of themes, dealing with all facets of psychology as a science of human behaviour and experience. Among other things, the effectiveness of early childhood advancement and different types of parent training, the newest developments in neuropsychology and in research on cognition and emotions will be examined from both a theoretical and practical angle. Other topics will cover strategies for stress coping, the influence of vulnerability or robustness on general health as well as healthy aging, the treatment and prevention of, or intervention in, eating disorders, innumeracy etc. Additionally, subjects such as the correlation between management styles, innovation, and work satisfaction will be examined in the context of work- and organisational psychology or the form of work processes in complex human-machine systems.

Renowned speakers include: Prof. Michael Posner (Oregon), Prof. Philip G. Zimbardo (Stanford), Prof. Shalom Schwartz (Jerusalem) and Prof. Elizabeth Spelke (Cambridge).

New Format: Controversional Debates
A highlight is the new format called “Controversional Debate”. An example of this will be the discussion on
Tuesday, 22. July from 15:00-16:30h in hall 6 of the ICC between Dr. Camilla Benbow (Vanderbilt University) and Prof. Zemira R. Mevarech (Bar-Ilan University, Israel), about whether it is better to sort students into different types of school at an early age, or if the concept of comprehensive schools preferable.

Another debate, also on
Tuesday, 22. July from 15:00 – 16:30h in the roof garden foyer of the ICC, will cover the challenges arising from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in testing the effectiveness of intervention measures. Both the feasibility and ethical legitimacy of randomised controlled trials will be discussed, and alternative methods critically examined. Prof. Dr. Barbara Schneider (Michigan State University) und Prof. Dr. Alan Kazdin (Yale University) will be
debating the issues.

Another highlight will be the lecture by
Philip G. Zimbardo, on 23. July, 10:15 - 11:15h in Hall 7,
who will – after the Stanford Experiment and with reference to Abu Ghraib prison – present his thoughts on the question of what makes people act in brutal and depraved ways.

There will also be other exciting methodical presentations on subjects such as the state and development of test diagnosis, adaptive testing, culturally sensitive diagnosis and many other cultural psychological questions. Multinational symposia will be focussing on subjects from a culturally transcendant perspective. The symposium chaired by Prof. Dr. Rainer Silbereisen (University of Jena) on social change in the development of childhood and adolescence is a good example.
